The novel establishes Mariam's strong belief in religion early on, describing the dedication she spends on memorizing the scriptures from the Koran. Various lines are scattered throughout the novel, motivating Mariam in different ways. How does Mariam's religious beliefs shape and characterize her?
In "A Thousand Splendid Suns" religion plays a major role in the characterization of Mariam primarily because that is how she was able to learn how to read and write, by studying the scriptures of the Quran. Later in the story, she is faced with plenty of struggles such as physical and verbal abuse, therefore leading her to evolve prayers to find closure and hope that her struggles would stop. Mariam never lost faith at any moment in story, even toward the end of her life when she walked the path of execution. Her prayers followed her all the way through as she intended to seek forgiveness with faith.
